Outbuildings and Home Insurance

It’s an increasing trend to add outbuildings to our gardens. Whether it’s driven by the need to work from home, have a gym or for the proverbial “man cave” these are now a common sight.

And being able to add extra space without having the expense and hassle to moving house cannot be ignored either. Planning laws generally make this easy and straightforward too. Most, if less than 2.4m high and over 1m from your boundary do not need any permission. You will need to check your local planning laws to make sure though.

Once you have your fancy garden building you then need to make sure the building and any contents are covered by your insurance. Home insurance policies will generally include a fixed amount of cover whether you have outbuildings or not. The limits on this cover when compared to the buildings many people have been adding probably won’t be sufficient. You will need to check your policy for the amount of cover you have and compare that to the cost to replace it. If it’s not sufficient talk to your provider if they can increase it. If they can’t, you could end up with a hefty bill when making a claim for a fallen tree on an outbuilding assuming it’s fully insured.

The other option is to find a provider that can fully insure your outbuilding. At Frontier we do things a little differently. If you need cover, you are free to add this to reflect the buildings you have now and any you add in the future. This could be the basic here garden shed right up to large stables, annexes and pool houses. It’s up to you to add the cover you need while not paying for cover you might not.
